All details, rules and entry forms are now available.

Would Team Managers please use the online entry system. This dramatically reduces administration by the organisers when coming to produce the event programme etc and also reduces the entry processing time. Athletes national registration numbers MUST be added on the entry NOT the regional vets/master membership number or club numbers. These are checked and ineligible runners will not be allowed to compete.

Walter Hill, the new BMAF Road Secretary, has produced a questionnaire for all BMAF members who are interested in the BMAF Road Championship events. The answers will help the BMAF to formulate and improve all aspects of these championships from 5k to the marathon.

24th Masters Relays

The newly named Denis Withers National Masters Open Road Relays took place yesterday, the 24th running of the event and the 17th time at Sutton Park.

Blessed with good weather, if a little blustery, the event was successfully completed without too many hitches. Reports on the race itself will no doubt appear in the usual athletics press so on this post I just want to record our thanks to Beverly Parris and her events team from Birmingham City Council without whose help the event couldn’t take place. Also to Mike Wrenn for all his hard work and dedication to the masters cause, and to the rest of the organising committee. Finally to all the competitors who travel great distances to take part and who contribute to the continuing success of the event.

Entries were down this year with 190 teams entered (242 in 2010) and I’m sure there were several reasons for this. One gripe that did come to the fore yesterday from a few quarters was the change of age groups. I am convinced that given a few years, these changes will be accepted, just as the M35′s have been. Time will tell.

The Denis Withers National Open Masters Road Relays

At a meeting of the BMAF Executive today, 7th May 2011, it was agreed that, in recognition of his contribution to the event, the BMAF Road Relays 2011 will be called the Denis Withers National Open Masters Road Relay Championships.

DENIS WITHERS

At this year’s road relay championships we pay tribute to the late Denis Withers. Many will have known of him as a fine race walker of international standard, a valued member of Midland Masters A. C. committee, and as an official. Today we recognise the huge contribution he made to the promotion of our National Road Relays. From the first year that the masters road relay championships were held in Sutton Park in 1989 up to and including 2009 Denis was the Entries Secretary at all the Sutton Park events. In that 20 year period he took entries on 15 occasions. In every case his attention to detail was first-class and when the entries were handed over for typing one knew that all the required information would be available in a clear and accurate form. He could even be tolerant and understanding when the typist failed to turn up to an agreed venue for the hand over of entries. In recent times he took on the chore of refreshing the marker for the turn point so that the race distance was repeatedly maintained. An efficient, warm and kind man his very significant contribution to our sport is rightly being recognised in the title of this year’s championships.

A Gentle Appeal

I am at the moment short of marshals for this years event at Sutton Park on the 21st May. There are currently 3 positions vacant for the 11.00 am race and 4 positions for the 1.00 pm race. Without marshals we will not be able to start the race. Entries Are Now Closed – BMAF Road Relays

The entries for the Nation Masters Open Road Relays in Sutton Park on the 21st May 2011 ARE NOW CLOSED.

I am still working through the queries with the UKA Registration Numbers of a few athletes before I can put an absolute figure on the number of clubs and teams entered. But it does look as though figures are down from last year(when there was an increase). I would welcome any comments or thoughts on possible reasons for this, please use the comments button on this post.

I am hoping to be able to post shortly a list of the entered teams. Watch this space!!

Online entries closed midnight last night. Many thanks to the 39 Clubs who have submitted entries for 85 teams. It saves us so much work to deal with online entries compared to postal entries and is appreciated by the organizing team.

We all look forward to seeing you on the 21st May.

VERY IMPORTANT NEWS – Extension of Closing Date

Extension of Closing Date For relays

11.00 am Friday – Waiting for postman to deliver mail because I’m expecting floods of entries for the Masters Relays!! A sudden realisation that it’s Good Friday (what an admission?), gosh and a Bank Holiday. No post now until next Tuesday!! Thinks… “I bet team managers have forgotten as well, panic all over the country”.

12 noon – Treat partner to lunch, bit of a peace offering really.

5.00 pm – Must extend closing date. Oh no… more Bank Holidays next week, no post again!!

With only 40 team entries received from the expected 200+ I’m assuming all are stuck in the post. But to help me with the processing of the entries I am extending the date for postal entries to be received by me until midday or after postal delivery on Thursday, 28^th April 2011.

Absolutely NO entries will be accepted after that date & time.

Registration Numbers

At the time of writing, I have only received a few postal entries but one problem I have encountered is with the requirement to quote an athletes registration number as well as a DOB. The registration number is the unique number given when an athlete registers with UKA, for example England Athletics. This unique registration number is given on the athletes competition license and the individual clubs should have a record of these as well as the athlete concerned.

A random check has already revealed some athletes are NOT registered and this can lead to disqualification.

I know it’s a bit late BUT please team managers, make sure ALL your athletes are eligible to compete and the entry forms filled out correctly.
